A GSTIN is always 15 characters long. Each segment encodes specific information about the taxpayer's state, identity, and registration type.
Position 1–2: State Code
The first two digits identify the state of GST registration. 27 = Maharashtra, 07 = Delhi, 29 = Karnataka. Each Indian state has a unique 2-digit code assigned by the GST Council.
Position 3–12: PAN Number
Characters 3 to 12 are the 10-digit PAN of the business entity or proprietor. This is the same PAN used for Income Tax filing, making GSTIN directly linked to a taxpayer's PAN identity.
Position 13: Entity Number
A digit from 1 to 9 (then A–Z) indicating how many GST registrations a business has in the same state. Most businesses have "1" — if a second registration exists in the same state, it becomes "2".
Position 14–15: Z + Check Digit
The 14th character is always 'Z' by GST regulation. The 15th is a check digit — calculated from the previous 14 characters — used to detect transcription errors and confirm the GSTIN's authenticity.
All India GST State Codes
Every GSTIN starts with a 2-digit state code assigned by the Government of India. Use this table to instantly identify which state a GSTIN belongs to and cross-check vendor details before raising invoices or processing Input Tax Credit claims.
Position 3–12: PAN Number
Always validate your supplier's GSTIN before claiming Input Tax Credit. An invalid or cancelled GSTIN will result in ITC.

Why You Must Validate GSTIN Before Every Transaction
Skipping GSTIN verification can lead to serious legal and financial consequences for your business. Here's why validating every supplier's GSTIN is non-negotiable.
Protect Input Tax Credit (ITC)
ITC claims are only valid when linked to a GST-registered, active supplier. Invalid GSTINs will result in ITC reversal — meaning you pay more tax than necessary.
Avoid GST Department Notices
Transactions with cancelled or fake GSTINs attract GST notices, audits, and penalties. Proactive validation is your first line of defence against compliance risk.
Accurate E-Invoice Generation
E-invoices uploaded to the IRP portal are rejected if the buyer's GSTIN is invalid. Validate before creating invoices to ensure zero rejections at the IRP.
Vet New Vendors & Suppliers
During vendor onboarding, validating GSTIN ensures the supplier is genuinely registered and operating legally under GST law — reducing fraud risk.
Clean Books for GST Audit
During annual GST audits, all supplier GSTINs are cross-verified. Businesses that pre-validate GSTINs pass audits faster with zero discrepancy findings.
Correct E-Way Bill Generation
E-Way bills generated with incorrect GSTINs are invalid and can lead to vehicle detention and penalty at GST checkpoints during goods movement.

What is GSTIN Validation and Why Does It Matter?
GSTIN validation is the process of verifying that a Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) is structurally correct, properly formatted, and corresponds to a legitimate registered taxpayer under India's GST framework. Every business registered under GST receives a unique 15-character GSTIN from the GSTN (Goods and Services Tax Network) portal — and verifying this number before transactions is a critical compliance step for any Indian business.
From claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC) to generating e-invoices, e-way bills, and filing GSTR-1 returns, the accuracy of GSTINs used in your transactions directly impacts your compliance standing with the GST Department. A single invalid GSTIN can cascade into ITC reversals, GSTR-2B mismatches, e-invoice rejections, and even GST notice under Section 16 of the CGST Act.
GSTIN vs GSTN vs UIN — What's the Difference?
GSTN is the IT backbone — the organization (Goods and Services Tax Network) that manages India's GST portal, returns filing, and taxpayer database. GSTIN is the 15-digit number issued to each registered taxpayer. UIN (Unique Identification Number) is a similar concept but reserved for UN bodies, embassies, and other specified persons who do not make taxable supplies but still need to claim refunds on goods purchased in India.
How ERP Group Automates GSTIN Validation at Scale
Manual GSTIN validation works fine for occasional checks, but businesses handling hundreds of vendors and daily invoices need automated validation built into their procurement and accounting workflows. This means zero manual effort, real-time validation against the live GSTN database, and automatic alerts when a supplier's registration status changes.
Beyond validation, ERP Group's GST module handles GSTR-1 filing, GSTR-3B reconciliation, e-invoice generation with IRN and QR code, e-way bill creation, ITC tracking, and complete GST audit trail — all from a single platform trusted by 5,000+ Indian MSMEs, CA firms, and traders across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and 50+ cities.
